Joe Zawinul was the Austrian jazz keyboardist and composer (1932–2007) best known for co-founding Weather Report with saxophonist Wayne Shorter.
He was born in Vienna, Austria, Zawinul and studied classical piano at the Vienna Conservatory before moving toward jazz.
He emigrated to the U.S. in 1959, winning a scholarship to Berklee but quickly joining Maynard Ferguson’s band, and later Cannonball Adderley’s group.
With Adderley, he composed the hit Mercy, Mercy, Mercy (1966).
Miles Davis & Fusion
In 1969, Zawinul contributed to Miles Davis’s In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew, helping shape the emerging jazz fusion sound.
Weather Report Era (1970–1986)
Co-founded with Wayne Shorter, Weather Report became one of the most influential fusion bands, blending jazz, funk, rock, and world music.
Famous works include Birdland, Black Market, and Heavy Weather.
The group’s lineup evolved, notably including bassist Jaco Pastorius in the late ’70s.
Later Projects & Legacy
After Weather Report, Zawinul led The Zawinul Syndicate, further exploring world music influences.
He was known for pioneering use of electronic keyboards and synthesizers in jazz.
Zawinul passed away in 2007, leaving a deep influence on fusion and modern jazz.
