Jack McDuff, often billed as “Brother Jack McDuff” — was one of the defining Hammond B-3 organists of soul jazz and hard bop. His gritty, blues-drenched sound helped turn the organ trio into a dominant small-group format in jazz during the late 1950s–60s.
Born September 17, 1926, in Champaign, Illinois, he
initially trained on piano before switching to the Hammond B-3 organ, where he developed his signature earthy tone and groove-forward phrasing.
Emerged in the late 1950s with organ-guitar-drums trios that emphasized blues, gospel, and rhythm-and-blues influences, and became a key artist on Prestige Records and later Blue Note Records, recording extensively and touring nonstop.
McDuff continued recording through the 1970s–90s, incorporating funk and fusion elements while maintaining a blues-based identity.
