Zakir Hussain was the modern face of the tabla, a once-in-a-generation musician who took a deeply classical instrument and made it speak fluently across the world.
Master of Hindustani classical music, trained by his father, the legendary Alla Rakha, Zakir absorbed the rhythmic language of North Indian music at the deepest level, tala, bols, improvisation, and long-form structure. He didn’t just “sit in” with Western musicians; he reshaped how rhythm functions in cross-cultural music. More than anyone else, he made the tabla intelligible, and thrilling, to non-Indian audiences without diluting its complexity.

Planet Drum (with Mickey Hart): Grammy-winning global percussion that treated rhythm as a universal language.
He also worked with artists ranging from Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan to Yo-Yo Ma, Charles Lloyd, Béla Fleck, and countless others.
Hussain was awarded multiple Indian civilian awards (including Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan), as well as
Grammy Awards.
