Vas is a cult-favorite Middle Eastern / Indian fusion project that sits at the crossroads of ambient, devotional, avant-folk, and experimental world music. Active primarily in the mid-to-late 1990s, the group carved out a sound that felt ancient and futuristic at the same time—ritualistic, trance-like, and deeply atmospheric.
Core members were Azam Ali, vocals and percussion, and Greg Ellis, frame drums and tabla-influenced percussion. Both artists later became central figures in the broader ethno-ambient / world-fusion movement.
Vas blends Middle Eastern modal traditions (Persian, Arabic influences), Indian classical sensibilities (raga-like melodic flow, tala-inspired rhythms), ambient and minimalist textures, and devotional / trance aesthetics.

Sunyata (1997), their most recognized work. The title refers to the Buddhist concept of emptiness / void. Hypnotic, meditative, and minimal, it is often cited in New Age, ambient, and world-fusion circles.
In the Garden of Souls (2000), darker, more percussive, and dramatic, with a strong ritualistic and nocturnal feel, pushes further into trance and devotional intensity.
