Rabih Abou-Khalil (born August 17, 1957, in Beirut, Lebanon) is an internationally acclaimed oud player and composer known for blending Arabic classical traditions with jazz improvisation and elements of European and global folk music.
He grew up in a musical family in Beirut, where his father was a skilled oud player. Abou-Khalil began studying the instrument at a young age, absorbing the rich modal traditions of Middle Eastern music.
In 1978, during the Lebanese Civil War, he left Lebanon and settled in Munich, Germany. There he studied classical flute at the Munich Academy of Music but soon returned to his primary instrument, the oud, and began developing his signature cross-cultural musical language.
By the mid-1980s, Abou-Khalil emerged on the European jazz scene with a unique concept, Arabic maqam-based melodies,
complex Middle Eastern rhythms, jazz improvisation, and instrumentation combining oud with saxophones, trumpets, percussion, and sometimes classical strings or accordion.
He became one of the leading figures in world-jazz, collaborating with artists from many traditions, including, Charlie Mariano (saxophone), Kenny Wheeler (trumpet), Glen Velez (frame drums), Steve Swallow (bass), and Joachim Kühn (piano).
His compositions are known for, intricate rhythmic cycles, strong melodic identity, playful, often humorous titles, and a balance of written structure and improvisation.
Over the decades, Abou-Khalil has toured worldwide and recorded extensively, becoming one of the most influential oud players in contemporary global music.
