George Winston was an American pianist and composer best known for his lyrical, atmospheric solo piano style often associated with New Age music, though he personally preferred the term folk piano or rural solo piano. His music blends elements of American folk & roots traditions, jazz harmonies,
impressionistic classical influences, minimalism & space, seasonal moods and landscapes.
Winston’s hallmark was his deceptively simple, spacious melodies guided by nature, silence, and emotional tone more than virtuosity or classical form. His playing emphasized rolling arpeggios, pedal-heavy sustain, folk-influenced melodies, harmonics and “muted piano” techniques, deeply evocative tone and pacing, He also explored stride/blues piano (inspired by Fats Waller), prepared & inside-piano percussion, and narrative, seasonal themes.
