Born October 20, 1957, in Tunis, Tunisia, Anouar Brahem is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary world music and jazz. A master of the oud (the fretless Middle Eastern lute), Brahem bridges traditional Arabic music with jazz, classical chamber music, and subtle improvisation.
He studied at Tunisia’s National Conservatory and later deepened his understanding of Arabic maqam traditions while also absorbing Western classical and jazz influences. In the 1980s, he began composing film scores and theatrical music before gaining international recognition through his long relationship with ECM Records, whose spacious, atmospheric production style perfectly complements his sound.
