Ak Dan Gwang Chil (often abbreviated ADG7) is a South Korean ensemble known for its explosive fusion of traditional Korean music and modern performance energy.
Formed in 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese rule, the name reflects that milestone (“Gwang” = liberation, “Chil” = 7 → 70).
The group brings together nine performers—including three female vocalists and six instrumentalists—who specialize in traditional instruments like gayageum (zither), ajaeng (bowed zither), daegeum (bamboo flute), piri, and percussion.
ADG7’s sound is often described as Korean shamanic folk-pop, "Shamanic funk” or “psychedelic gugak”, a blend of gut (ritual music) and minyo (folk songs) from the Hwanghae region (now in North Korea).
They use only traditional instruments, but structure songs with pop-like repetition and groove. Performances mix ritual intensity, humor, choreography, and bright costumes. Their work aims to revive and reinterpret lesser-known North Korean folk traditions.
